Interesting Cases

  1. Trauma especially stabbings. Had a young gentleman who came in with sucking chest wound after being stabbed
  2. Burns. There are a large number of patients presenting with burns, normally late when they have developed contractures. The reason for the huge numbers of burns is that most people still cook over an open fire, that is often sitting outside their house.  They also burn most of their rubbish on the side of the road, making it easy to step into hot ashes when walking past at night.
  3. Oesophageal cancer – several patients presented with this in advanced stages and we were unable to do anything about it due to the fact that we don’t have oesophageal stents and the equipment to put them in. This is one thing I would like to try and get donated in the future
  4. Lots of cases of cancer (more than I expected) eg anal cancer, referred to Dar Es Salaam for radiotherapy, advanced breast cancer, incurable pancreatic cancer, head tumour that we had done a skull x-ray that showed no bony involvement 2 weeks prior, that at time of operation we discovered had eroded 10cm diameter hole in skull.
